The world’s first commercial pilot-scale CEGSB (Carrier Enhanced Granular Sludge Bed) bioreactor has been commissioned. The reactor is now entering its testing and commissioning phase, during which the process performance will be monitored through measurements in a real operating environment. The objective is to verify the functionality of the technology and establish a foundation for its broader commercial deployment both in Finland and internationally.
The CEGSB technology has been designed to efficiently reduce the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of municipal wastewater entering wastewater treatment plants through biological treatment while simultaneously producing biogas under continuously changing process conditions. Compared with biogas reactors commonly used around the world, the physical size of the CEGSB bioreactor in this case is estimated to be approximately 250 times smaller, while providing the same wastewater pre-treatment capacity and efficiency. The bioreactor is owned by Pohjois-Suomen Biokaasu Oy.
